1 Bedroom Barndominium Floor Plans

one bedroom barndominium plans

When people think about barndominiums, they often picture large homes suitable for growing families or multiple generations. But not all barndominiums measure thousands of square feet. A 1 bedroom barndominium can serve as a spacious, comfortable home for one or two people while maintaining a more modest size.

Here are some reasons 1 bedroom barndos are taking off:

one bedroom barndominiums for sale
  • A perfect balance: 1 bedroom barndominiums are typically relatively compact, but they still feature spacious, open, airy designs. This is the perfect balance to feel like you are living in a roomy home, but keeping your footprint small.
  • Increased awareness: More and more people are becoming familiar with barndominiums. Not everyone who falls in love with barndos wants to have a huge family. A 1 bedroom barndo lets a couple or single homeowner enjoy living in a barn-style home.
  • Flexible living and working: When you just have a single bedroom in a barndo, that potentially gives you more square footage to put toward other purposes. You could have a home office, a craft room, a larger garage/workshop, etc.
  • Cost savings: Even very small traditional houses are out of budget for many people with today’s growing wealth inequality. In some scenarios, it may be more cost-effective to simply build a single bedroom barndo than it would be to buy or build a traditional house.
  • Some people just prefer a smaller home. It means less to clean and maintain, which can save time and reduce stress. There’s no reason to get a huge home with extra bedrooms that you’ll never use.

Our Most Popular 1 Bedroom Barndominiums

Let’s check out some single bedroom barndominium plans that are worth considering.

BCO-40131 Barndominium House Plan

This single story barn apartment plan measures 1,500 square feet. The layout is simple, with a combined kitchen, dining room, and living room on one side of the house, and the master bedroom, closet and bathroom on the other side. There is a door in the kitchen that opens to a small laundry room. The master closet is a walk-in closet, so there is plenty of space for your things.

The front porch spans the entire width of the home, ensuring you can make the most of your outdoor space as well.

BCO-40077 Seth Barndominium House Plan

Those in search of 1000 sq ft barndominiums will enjoy this floor plan. It features one floor and a single bedroom, but two bathrooms. It has a front porch that spans the width of the home.

You enter into the living room, which is combined in an open plan with the dining room and kitchen. There is a fireplace in the dining room. A door on the right side of the kitchen leads to a bathroom.

Left of the living room is the entrance to the master bedroom, which comes with a master bathroom and a walk-in closet.

This floor plan would be a good one if you regularly entertain guests, and don’t want them to walk through your bedroom just to use the bathroom.

BCO-40033 Barndominium House Plan

This barndo home measures 40’ x 29’, but it is not quite 1,160 square feet because the home is wider at the back than it is at the front. Like the Seth model, the BCO-40033 includes a single bedroom and a pair of bathrooms. It features a covered front porch, like the other barndos we have shared.

You enter through the front doors into a combined living room, dining room and kitchen. It’s a corner kitchen, with a utility room and bathroom adjacent. On your left, you’ll find the door that leads to the bedroom, walk-in closet and bathroom.

BCO-40043 Harris Barndominium House Plan

This 1 bedroom barndominium floor plan includes 1,157 heated square feet, a single bedroom, and 2 bathrooms. Like the others we have shared, it is just one floor. What sets it apart is that it features a 2-car garage. It also has a large, covered porch.

The front door leads to the living room, which is combined with a dining room and kitchen. The kitchen is in the back, and is just slightly offset from the dining room, but still with an open flow of space between the two.

To the left of the kitchen is a door that leads to a bathroom. Beyond, there is another door leading to a storage area. Both the bathroom and storage area have doors that go directly to the garage, which can also be accessed from the dining room.

The bedroom is on the opposite side of the house, and can be reached via a door leading off of the dining room. A door inside the bedroom takes you to a dressing room. From here, you can reach a wet room, water closet, and a walk-in closet that also features a washer and dryer.

Having the laundry room inside the closet may be convenient, though not everybody will want to listen to their laundry while they are trying to relax in their bedroom.

If necessary, you could probably modify this plan so that the laundry room is inside the garage, particularly if you only intend to store one vehicle in there.

BCO-40026 Barndominium House Plan

This single bedroom barndo measures 28’ x 40’. Note that a little bit of the kitchen protrudes at the back end of the house, which is part of the 40’. The entire home does not measure 40’.

This home includes the classic covered porch at the front. The doors lead into the open layout. The living room and dining room are combined at the front, with the kitchen in the back, also part of the same open space. From the living room, you can take a door into the bedroom, which has a bathroom and walk-in closet.

FAQ

Q: Is a 1 bedroom barndominium large enough?

A: That depends on your personal needs, so only you can answer that question. If you don’t have any kids, and it’s just you, or maybe you and one other person, 1 bedroom may be plenty. As you can see, most 1 bedroom barndos are under 2,000 square feet, but include everything you likely need to live comfortably.

Q: How much does it cost to build a 1 bedroom barn home?

A: Most single bedroom barndominium plans are in the 1,000-2,000 square foot range. Barndos between 1,000 and 1,500 square feet tend to cost anywhere from $150,000 to $250,000 to build. Those in the 1,500 to 2,500 square foot range might cost anywhere from $250,000 to $400,000 square feet to build.

A variety of factors can impact costs, including location, property characteristics, materials, labor, finishing, insulation, doors and windows, etc.

A: You can look for single bedroom barndominium plans online. We recommend ordering from BarndominiumPlans.com, as they have a wide selection of appealing plans, and provide you with detailed plan packages. We’ve shared some examples with you in this post.

Q: What is included in 1 bedroom floor plans?

-4 Elevations – Front, Back, Both Sides
-Detailed Floor Plan Drawing
-Electrical Plans
-Plumbing Plans
-Wall Section
-Roof Plan

-Roof Framing Plan
-Foundation Plan

Q: Is it cheaper to build a barndominium or a house?

A: It typically costs less to build a barndo than it does to build a traditional stick-built house.

  • Barndominium: $70 to $160 per square foot
  • Traditional stick-built house: $100 to $200 per square foot

One of the reasons it costs less to build a barndo is because they are assembled out of prefabricated metal components. This is a more cost-effective construction method than the traditional approach where everything is built on-site.

That is why even if you just want a small single bedroom house, not a huge family home, going with a barndominium can be a great idea.
