If you are building a wedding and event venue, one type of modern structure to consider is our favorite- the barndo. In this guide, we will explain a bit about why barndos for weddings are trending. We’ll also tell you more about building a barndominium wedding venue, and share a project with you for inspiration.
Why Choose a Barn for Your Event Venue?
Here are a few key reasons to consider building a barndominium wedding & event venue:
- Spacious, clear-span floor plans: Whether used for the wedding ceremony, the reception, or both, a wedding venue ideally should be a large, open space with minimal obstructions. This design maximizes capacity, provides room for activities, and makes it easy to shoot photos. That is exactly what you can achieve with a wedding barn.
- Ample illumination: The open, unobstructed nature of the floor plan lets plenty of natural light flood the interior of the wedding barn. That is essential for both practical and aesthetic reasons.
- Fast and affordable construction: Barndominiums can be constructed rapidly and affordably, allowing you to reduce the upfront costs for your wedding venue business, and start earning money more quickly.
- High energy efficiency: With the right design and materials, barndominiums can be very energy-efficient structures, which reduces your long term operation costs. Make sure to use thick, high-quality insulation to maximize this barndo benefit.
- A beautiful aesthetic: A lot of people are in love with the classic barndominium aesthetic right now, and are looking for exactly that ambiance for their wedding. Now is the time to capitalize on that trend.
- Versatile: A barndominium can easily be converted to fill a wide range of purposes. So, if you ever want a change later down the road, you can find other commercial or even residential uses for the property.
Barn Wedding Venue Designs
There are multiple size options for a barn wedding venue, but a typical size is 60’ x 100’.
A wedding barndominium venue should include a chapel/ceremony space, a dining hall and reception space, a dance floor, a stage, room for outdoor entertainment and ceremonies, a kitchen, a bar, dressing rooms, storage, and parking. While large windows can bring in natural illumination, you also need high-quality lighting throughout the structure.
Make sure that your structure is well-insulated, so that it is energy efficient and comfortable in all weather conditions.
Also, it is extra important to choose the right styling and finishes when customizing event barn kits. The appearance of the venue will have a major impact on its success as a business.

Let’s take a closer look…
The Carrollock Farms wedding barn venue has a delightfully rustic, traditional look, evoking images of classic Americana.
This is achieved through its overall shape and design, its sloped metal roofs, its French doors and windows, and its bright red siding. It is a perfect architectural complement to its lovely surroundings.
Here is a look at the tables in the reception area, as well as the bar in the back corner. As you can see, the space is not entirely free of vertical supports, but there is still a very wide span between them in the middle of the barn. The supports also are aesthetically pleasing, and perfect for holding additional illumination.
The ceiling trusses add a great deal of visual appeal, while the vaulted shape contributes to the airy spaciousness of the barn. In this shot, lights are strung between the trusses and some open utilities (ventilation, we assume) for a pleasing effect.
Here is another angle showing the reception space. As you can see, quite a few chairs and tables can be packed into this space.
Another shot of the ceiling really gives you an appreciation for how warm and inviting the ambiance is in this barndominium wedding venue.
Here is a closer look at the bar area. As you can see, there is plenty of room for whomever is going to be working behind the counter. The bar also features a design and materials that blend in nicely with the rest of the layout.

Questions to Ask When Designing a Barndo Wedding Venue
While you are browsing through wedding barn floor plans, here are some useful questions you can ask yourself to help you choose the layout that will be right for your needs:
- Will the venue host ceremonies, receptions, or both?
- Will you host indoor events, outdoor events, or both?
- Along with weddings, what other types of events do you want to be able to host at your venue?
- What is your climate like? What features do you need in your building materials and design to accommodate it? What about in your outdoor spaces?
- What features does the building site have? How can you make good use of them in your design (i.e. picturesque views that could be featured through large windows)?
- What is the maximum capacity of guests you want to be able to host at the venue?
- What are all the services and activities you want the venue to be able to host and handle?
- What look, feel and ambiance do you want to offer with your venue? What are people in your area likely to find appealing?
- How many staff will you have to help you operate your business?
- Will the venue be a standalone business, or is it going to be part of a larger business of some kind (i.e. a vineyard or such)?
- What is your timeline and budget for the barndominium wedding venue project?
While you are brainstorming, you will no doubt come up with other important considerations when choosing your floor plan.
