Choosing colors for your barndom can be an exciting yet very challenging task. The right color scheme can enhance the building’s appearance and create a welcoming atmosphere. But it is easy to get it wrong and be filled with regret everytime you pull up to your home.
Take the time to make sure you will be happy with you colors in the future. The colors you pick will set the tone for the entire structure, both inside and out. Barndominium color combinations can range from modern and elegant to rustic and bold, allowing homeowners to express their personal style.
When selecting exterior colors, it’s important to consider the surroundings and local architecture.
Natural tones like earthy browns, soft greens, and warm grays often work well for barndominiums in rural settings. For a more contemporary look, some homeowners opt for striking color contrasts or monochromatic schemes. White and black exteriors are the most popular for this year.
Interior color choices can significantly impact the mood and perceived space of a barndominium too. Light, neutral shades can make rooms feel larger and brighter, while darker hues can create a cozy, intimate atmosphere. It’s crucial to balance personal preferences with practical considerations like maintenance and resale value when making color decisions.
Let’s take a deeper look at color theory and how your choice of color can impact your build.
There are a lot of things to factor in when you make this choice: your personal preferences and aesthetic tastes, the overall look and feel you are going for, what you think might be appealing to other homebuyers if you plan to resell at some point in the future.
If you are having a hard time coming up with ideas on your own, it may help to take a look at popular trends.
In this post, we will explore trending barndominium colors for 2025. Before we do, however, let’s take a look at what has been trending in 2023 and 2024.
Barndo Color Trends in Recent Years
First of all, here were the top pole barn colors we found listed for 2023:
- Charcoal gray
- White
- Alpine white
- Burnished slate
- Smoke gray
- Black
- Tan / Beige
- Crinkle black
- Hunter green
- Red
We were not able to find such a carefully curated list of specific barndo colors for 2024. But here were some colors that were popular in 2024 for barndominiums:
- Charcoal gray
- Brown
- White
- Tan / Beige
- Bronze
- Hunter green
- Red
As you can see, there is a lot of overlap. Here were some ways that trends evolved in 2024 compared to previous years:
- Lower contrast: While neutral colors remained popular, we saw lower contrasts between them in 2024 compared to 2023. We also saw more mid-tones.
- Matching scenery: In 2024, more people building barndominiums went out of their way to try and match the colors of their homes to their environments to make them blend well with the natural settings.
- More warm-toned neutral colors: While we still saw a strong preference for neutral colors, more of them in 2024 were browns or similar hues (though cooler grays remained popular).
- Some classics remained mainstays: We can safely say that certain barndo hues will never go out of style. Red, for example, will always be popular (more on that shortly).
Predicting Barndo Color Trends for 2025
Now that we have caught you up on popular barndo colors from 2023 and 2024, we have laid the groundwork to give context to a discussion of barn color ideas and trends for 2025. Let’s go over some color schemes to consider for your metal barndo.
Mocha Mousse (and other browns)
Mocha Mousse is Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year (Pantone 17-1230 Mocha Mousse).
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color, described it like this: “Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, Pantone 17-1230 Mocha Mousse extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe.”
So, we are seeing a continuation in the popularity of browns and other warm neutrals that started in 2024. Consider Mocha Mousse and other browns, beiges and tans for your barndo’s interior, exterior, or both.
Brick Red
One of Glidden’s colors of the year is Brick Red. This warm, muted red can work great as a color for your barndominium’s siding, putting a twist on the classic barndo red. It also can work nicely as an accent color, either for your exterior trim, or in your interior.
Speaking of red, going with a more classic (and bright) barn red is always an option with a barndominium. It gives your home a timeless, classic, rustic appeal that will never go out of style.
The Sherwin-Williams 2025 Color Capsule of the Year
For 2025, Sherwin-Williams has released a “Color Capsule of the Year,” rather than a single color of the year. Here are all the colors in the capsule:
- Sunbleached SW 9585
- Chartreuse SW 0073
- Rain Cloud SW 9639
- Clove SW 9605
- Malabar SW 9110
- Bosc Pear SW 6390
- White Snow SW 9541
- Mauve Finery SW 6282
- Grounded SW 6089
You will notice that a number of these are warm neutral tones. So, they should fit in well with some of the other barndo color ideas in this post.
Charcoal gray
Charcoal Grey is a hue that has been popular for barndominiums for a couple of years now. During 2025, we expect that its popularity will continue to endure. It looks great as part of a neutral color scheme, or combined with other more saturated hues. You could also use it as part of two tone barndo color schemes.
Muted Warm Hues for Interiors
We are seeing a clear trend toward warm, muted colors for use in interiors in 2025. We already shared Brick Red with you as an idea for your exterior paint. It also can work well as an accent color indoors, whether for trim, cabinets or furnishings.
Another of Glidden’s colors of the year in 2025 is Purple Basil. This color is best described as a kind of muted eggplant purple, but a bit warmer on the spectrum.
As you would guess, Purple Basil and Brick Red accompany each other well. Either or both colors also complement warm browns and beiges.
Minwax has selected a similar color of the year, called Violet. It is described as being in the “blue” family, but with “red undertones.” So, it sounds like it offers a balance of warm and cool.
Another color to consider is BEHR’s color of the year f or 2025, which is called Rumors. This color is described as a muted red featuring brown undertones. In fact, you could look at it as something between Brick Red and the two muted purples we have shared with you.
Neutral Colors
While you can look at browns and beiges as “warm neutrals,” true neutrals are also worth considering. Along with Charcoal Grey, think about using other shades of grey. Black and white also can look great on a barndo exterior or interior.
Nature Colors
It seems reasonable that some of the trends that were so popular in 2024 will continue into 2025, including the hues of nature.
We have already covered some of this by discussing brown and grey barndo colors. But other nature colors you could consider include muted greens and blues, which can invoke associations with water, the sky, and foliage.
Depending on where you live, there could be other hues as well that could be classified as “nature colors.” For example, in a desert featuring orange and reddish rock, you could also choose those hues for your barndo’s color scheme.
Questions to Ask When Choosing Barndo Colors
Painting a home is expensive and time-consuming. So, if possible, you should try to pick colors you will love for a long time to come. Asking yourself the following questions can help you assess your options.
- How long do I plan to stay in the barndominium? Will I resell it at some point?
- Do I prefer more subtle, neutral colors, or do I like bolder colors?
- What aesthetic and ambiance am I trying to create with my choice of colors?
- Is there any functional purpose I am trying to achieve with my barndo colors? For example, do I want to create an open, airy look that enhances the sense of space in the interior with light colors?
- Why do I like the colors I am choosing? Is it because I love them, or because they are trending? If the latter, will I still enjoy them in five years or ten?

Color Theory in Architecture
Color theory plays a crucial role in architectural design. It influences how people perceive and interact with spaces. The right color choices can create specific moods and atmospheres in buildings.
Color Psychology
Colors affect human emotions and behavior. Red can increase energy and excitement, making it suitable for social areas. Blue promotes calm and focus, ideal for workspaces or bedrooms. Yellow brings cheerfulness and warmth, perfect for kitchens or living rooms.
Green connects with nature and promotes relaxation. It works well in healthcare settings. Purple adds luxury and sophistication to spaces like formal dining rooms. Orange stimulates appetite and conversation, fitting for restaurants.
Neutral colors like white, gray, and beige create a sense of spaciousness. They serve as excellent backdrops for other design elements. This explains why Barndominium colors often use neutrals with bold accent colors for visual interest.
Choosing the right color palette is key for barndominiums. Consider the building’s surroundings, natural light, and intended use. Test colors in different lighting conditions before making final decisions.
Our Recommendation For Your Color Choice: Go With Neutral Color Schemes
Neutral color schemes offer flexibility and timeless appeal for barndominiums. They work well with open floor-plans and invite you into the home.
Popular neutral choices include:
- Whites
- Grays
- Beiges
- Tans
These colors create a clean, modern look and can make spaces feel larger.
Neutral colors also provide an excellent backdrop for bold accents or natural materials like wood and stone. They can highlight architectural features without overwhelming the space. If you want to have exposed beams or window walls, a neutral color is a must have.
